LACoFD Catalina Brush Fire Drill - April 2017

In April of 2017 I flew to Santa Catalina Island with members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department to document a large scale brush fire training drill. This was not as much an active fire drill as it was a logistics drill to train in coordinating the movement of fire crews and apparatus to the island of coast of southern California in the event of a substantial brush fire. The Los Angeles County Fire Department, along with the Avalon Fire Department, are responsible for fire suppression on the large island. Transportation to the island was provided by the LASD's Air Rescue 5 and the return trip by LACoFD (Firehawk) Copter 19. © Craig Durling

"San Gabriel Complex" (Fish Fire) - Duarte, CA - June 20, 2016 (VIDEO)

While en route to the "Reservoir IC" brush fire on Highway 39 in the Angeles National Forest I diverted to a new start in the nearby city of Duarte, this one threatening homes and horse stables. I got there as the first apparatus arrived and, as you can see, things were a little hairy. Making already difficult fire conditions worse, those on the fireground also had to battle 113 degree temperatures. At the time of this writing the "Fish Fire" (Fish IC) was reported to be at 3,000 acres with one LASD Deputy being transported to a local hospital with heat exhaustion. The fire has since been renamed the "San Gabriel Complex".  The cause of this fire is under investigation. © Craig Durling/DurlingMedia
