Physical Rescue Traffic Collision - Burbank, CA

In the early afternoon hours of March 9, 2011 Burbank Fire Department personnel responded to a traffic collision with entrapment near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Bob Hope.  First-in units reported a single vehicle vs. tree in a park along the roadway with one person trapped inside.  As firefighters used hydraulic equipement to free the passenger from the mangled minivan Burbank Police Officers attempted to figure out exactly what occurred.  The vehicle struck a tree head-on at near full speed.  The tree, however, was in the middle of a park along the 134 freeway and it did not appear the vehicle came over the freeway embankment almost fifty feet above.  Witnesses reported that the minivan exited the freeway offramp almost 1,000 feet south of the collision scene, sped across the street and into the park, barely missing several trees until striking one near the center of the park.  The exact cause of the events leading up to the collision are unknown at this time but the investigation is ongoing.  The adult passenger was ultimately freed and she, along with the driver, was transported to LA County/USC Medical Center with unknown injuries.
