Fatal School Bus Collision - East Los Angeles

At about 3:00pm on October 25, 2010 LAFD  and LAPD units responded to the intersection of Soto and 1st Street (2332 E. 1st Street) in east Los Angeles for a multi-vehicle traffic collision.  LAFD personnel arriving on scene quickly requested 50 rescue ambulances for an LAUSD school bus which had rolled over and sent it's driver and 44 students from Roosevelt High School tumbling inside.  When the "smoke cleared" 18 students were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.  A pedestrian lay dead at the scene and three youths were in custody for suspicion of felony hit & run and conspiracy.  The black BMW reportedly failed to stop for a red light at the intersection, struck and killed a pedestrian and then struck the passing school bus which lost control, rolled over and came to a stop on a nearby sidewalk.  The youths in the BMW reportedly fled on foot, injured and bleeding from the collision.  Two of them were apprehended by a construction worker as they hid behind a nearby car and the third was turned in to authorities by his/her parents after treatment at a local hospital.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was on scene along with several other city and LAUSD officials.  CHP was handling the collision investigation as that agency regulates and investigates all collision involving occupied school buses in the state of California.
